Richard Lennox - Biography
Richard Lennox started his musical career at the age of 3, learning tunes on his mother’s piano. Fully supported & encouraged by his parents a couple of years later , he quickly took the traditional career route of learning from a music specialist, then entered competitions including Young Musician of the Year, the Radio 2 version followed, leading eventually to a place at the Welsh College of Music and Drama.
From the age of 8 he was already playing for theatre productions as a result of being asked to play for the junior section of the Weston Operatic Society. Eventually he played the complete shows, and when introduced by the compere, Richard had to stand on a chair to be seen by the audience over the pit wall!
Playing first by ear and later learning to sight read, gave him the early skill base to add to the classically trained ethos which was to make him an “all rounder“. Countless numbers of shows and productions followed both in the Theatre and Concert Hall.
At 14 he started organ lessons with the local choirmaster and quickly got to grips with playing the organ for Sunday Services which then resulted in Recitals on Cathedral, Classical and Cinema Organs.
As a regular Festival competitor he gained the highest mark known at the Highbridge Festival with the Adjudicator awarding 96 marks for a performance of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Work in many genres followed, including Theatre, Shows, Cruises, Cabaret, Radio Broadcasts, Concerts & Television. As well as a solo performing artist, he enjoys accompanying a wide range of singers and instrumentalists.
While at college he added the Double Bass to his list of Instruments, resulting in him freelancing for various Orchestras and Ensembles. His musical activities are as varied as playing keyboards for numerous stage productions, as well as musically directing them, to sessions for various programmes and Artists, Pantomimes and Tribute shows. Last year saw Richard playing a double Concerto at the Royal Albert Hall, both Rhapsody in Blue and an Organ Toccata in the same evening.
Being a freelance musician involved many night drives and two years ago he narrowly escaped from a car crash, having to rescue not only his musical equipment but his boxer shorts from the central reservation on the M5 !! Accident prone? Maybe, putting up Christmas Lights he fell from a ladder and smashed his left elbow joint. He had an emergency elbow operation and the arm is as good as it was before. This incident nearly made him compose Lennox’s Concerto for the Right Hand!
Richard is now a freelance fully rounded musician, not only performing but musically directing everything from concerts, theatre & his own crossover concerts, to tribute shows. Richard has released two albums, first entitled Calm beneath the storm which demonstrates him as a crossover artist which he also produced himself as well as composing the title track. The second being a CD of popular Organ favourites. He is aiming to be the next major classical crossover sensation.
